Lagoon
designers help win America's Cup
The
naval architect company used by Lagoon, VPLP, were one of
the design teams on the 2010 America's Cup winner, BMW
Oracle.
With
boat design unrestricted, the 33rd America's Cup race moved
from traditional monohulls to the fastest form of sailing
with head-to-head competition between two giant multihulls -
Alinghi's catamaran and BMW Oracle's trimaran.
Although one boat had two hulls and one three, when racing
both were flying a hull - thus essentially highly
counterbalanced monohulls...!
The
French design firm of VPLP (Van Peteghem Lauriot Prevost)
have been the key naval architects since Lagoon's very
earliest days as the racing division of Jeanneau.
VPLP have been responsible, along with the Lagoon in-house
design teams, for all Lagoon sailing catamaran models -
though none are quite as radical as the BMW Oracle trimaran.
And in case any reassurance is needed
for the cruising community, Lagoon catamarans are not
designed to sail quite this way and will not fly a hull...!
